(2025·江西·模拟预测)Recent research on insects trapped in amber has revealed surprising information about male mosquitoes. It has long been known that female mosquitoes are the ones that bite humans and animals to feed on blood. However, the discovery of ancient mosquitoes in amber suggests that male mosquitoes may have also fed on blood in the past.
Amber is formed when tree resin (树脂) hardens and preserves small animals or plants that get stuck in it. Dr. Azar, a paleontologist (古生物学家) at the Nanjing Institute of Geology and Palaeontology, studies amber with the aim of understanding how flowering plants and pollinator (传粉昆虫) insects have evolved together. However, while polishing one of the amber specimens to a thin slice that could be examined under a microscope, he was taken back. He found that two of the specimens were the oldest known fossils from the mosquito family, for their sharp, elongated mouth parts with tiny toothlike bristles (鬃毛).
Further examination of the insects yielded another surprise. These two mosquitoes also had pincerlike organs called claspers, which are used to hold onto females during mating. This finding challenges the belief that only female mosquitoes have mouth parts designed for bloodsucking. Dr. Azar believes that these ancient male mosquitoes may have fed on blood but eventually lost this ability during the evolution of the species when flowering plants appeared.
However, some experts remain skeptical about his assumption. Dale Greenwalt, also a paleontologist at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, finds the idea interesting but controversial. He suggests that further research is needed to confirm if these insects were indeed mosquitoes and if their mouth parts were used for bloodsucking or other.
Despite the ongoing debate, Dr. Greenwalt acknowledges the importance of bold claims like Dr. Azar’s in pushing scientific research forward. He believes that even if some scientists are conservative, those who are not can eventually correct any errors. Only time and further investigation will reveal the truth about these ancient male mosquitoes and their feeding habits.

D.To examine the preservation process of insects in amber.
253.What does the underlined phrase “taken back” mean in Paragraph 2?
A.Being removed. B.Being astonished.
C.Being reminded of something. D.Being brought to someplace.
254.What does the presence of claspers of the examined ancient mosquitoes imply?
A.They belong to the oldest mosquitoes. B.They prove that the mosquitoes are males.
C.They help insects sip nectar from flowers. D.They show that mosquitoes prefer plants.
255.What is Dr. Greenwalt’s attitude towards the hypothesis proposed by Dr. Azar?
A.He fully supports Dr. Azar’s findings and believes they are accurate.
B.He thinks it is too risky and lacks sufficient evidence.
