24-25高一下·江苏苏州·期中)On the blue ocean surrounding Weizhou Island in Guangxi, a group of volunteers are preparing to dive into the water. Huang Wen and his team have spent years planting, monitoring and surveying coral reefs (珊瑚礁) around the island, diving the waters more than 500 times as part of efforts to restore its coral reefs.

As a professor at the School of Marine (海洋的) Sciences at Guangxi University, Huang developed a strong interest in coral reefs during his diving trips in Malaysia, where he discovered a lively underwater world that looked like a magical aquarium (水族馆) filled with colorful coral. Those trips left a lasting impression on him. “I remember my first dive underwater at Weizhou Island in 2015. I was so disappointed to find low coral coverage,” recalled Huang, explaining why he joined the university’s team to make a change.

Huang said that not only do coral reefs play an important part in keeping the balance of underwater ecosystem, but they also act as a protective barrier for natural disasters such as storms and tsunamis. “Coral reefs are the ‘Great Wall’ of the seabed, capable of keeping out 70% to 90%of wave impacts. Without them, the sandy coastal rocks are easily washed away,” explained Huang. Since the 1950s, global coral reef degradation has become increasingly severe, endangering their survival and leading to the marine life’s dying out.

Under Huang’s guidance, the team has successfully grown more than 10 coral species and over 50,000 individual corals, marking great progress in their restoration efforts. Their hard work has resulted in a survival rate of over 80% for coral in the northern restoration zone, making coral communities thrive and attract diverse marine life.

“I hope more people will join our cause to protect coral reefs,” Huang said, “In the future, our team will continue to perfect our technology and restore more damaged coral reefs. Once our experience on Weizhou Island matures, we plan to expand it to the South China Sea and even overseas.”

24-25高一下·江苏连云港·期中)Great efforts have been made to close the gender (性别) pay gap. But not all fields of work are created equal.

Alexandra Light, who has been doing ballet since she was two years old, says even the dance world is dominated (主宰) by men at the top. “A lot of people on the outside of the dance world still don’t realize,” she said, “in the industry, it’s still very much a boys’ game.”

Tracey Rockett, who teaches management practice at Texas Christian University, says she can point to any number of studies that show the wide gulf (鸿沟) between women and management. That gulf persists even in fields dominated by women.

“In public schools, for example, men are in the minority, but to keep them, very often, they will be offered promotion opportunities much earlier than women are,” Rockett said. “You see that in the restaurant industry, in education, in healthcare, and in dance.”

According to the Dance Data Project, among the largest 150 ballet companies in America, only a quarter of works produced last year were choreographed (编舞) by women.

Light is a lead dancer. She knows the difficulties in reaching the position where she is now. “You know, there’s a choreographic workshop, and you don’t sign up for that because you’re like,’Well, I need to, I need to dance,’” Light said.

During the pandemic, women quit the workforce in larger numbers. They reported larger rates of burnout while taking on the extra burden of childcare. At companies where women often take the lead on efforts of diversity and equity, they typically don’t get additional pay.

But Rockett sees hope in Light’s generation, Gen Z (used to describe Americans born during the late 1990s and early 2000s). “That is one thing we are seeing in particular with Gen Z. They will leave without a backup job. If they’re dissatisfied, they’re going to take off,” Rockett said.

82What does Light reveal about the dance world in Paragraph 2?

AThere are many boys dancing. BMen take up senior positions.

CMany girls give up dancing in the end. DWomen are not necessarily good dancers.

83What does the underlined word “persists” in Paragraph 3 mean?

AVaries. BRevives. CBalances. DContinues.

84What feeling does Light express in Paragraph 6?

AConfusion. BRelief. CHelplessness. DEagerness.

85What does Rockett see in Gen Z?

AThey are unwilling to do just one job. BThey are brave to say no to unfairness.

CThey always do what they have planned. DThey choose to ignore the gender pay gap.

24-25高一下·江苏连云港·期中)Every day at sunrise on the small French Polynesian island of Rimatara, Tiraha Mooroa goes for a run with Koha, the dog. Koha has an important job: to sniff out (嗅出) and kill any black rats he can find. Koha is the island’s only defense against the invasive rats. Keeping the island rat-free is vital: the rats, which arrive via boats and cargo ships (货船), are the single biggest threat to native birds of the Pacific Islands, including the Rimatara lorikeet. The beautiful bird is critically endangered—only 1,500 remain in the wild, and a third of the entire population lives on tiny Rimatara island. Now, of the 118 islands in French Polynesia, Rimatara is one of only three without the rats.

The lorikeet was once widespread in the South Pacific. By the 18th century, however, it had already been hunted to near extinction by the Polynesians, who prized the bird’s red feathers for making headdresses. By 1900, the island’s queen, Temaeva V, banned hunting of the birds, effectively preserving the remaining population. Since the 1990s, however, the lorikeets have faced rising threats.

Socio-environmental researcher Samuel Ravatua-Smith heads up a nest observation program, launched by the conservation association Rima Ura, to better understand the lorikeet and its population decline. The program monitors all lorikeet nests on the island with Bluetooth-enabled cameras. Ravatua-Smith’s face falls as he watches the footage (镜头). “The videos confirm that after the visit of a white-tailed tropicbird, the two hatchlings are no longer in the nest. The while-tailed tropicbird may be targeting and taking over lorikeet nests because of its own habitat loss,” Ravatua-Smith says.

It’s an important finding that brings Rima Ura another step closer to saving the lorikeet. This year, close to 100 new houses are set to be built to provide housing for residents in need. The clearing and construction may end up encompassing (涉及) more than half of the island. Rima Ura works to educate residents of Rimatara about how they can help protect the lorikeet, for instance encouraging locals to plant more fruit trees around their houses. Members of Rima Ura who live on the island also mark nesting trees and participate in reforestation initiatives.

78What can we infer from Paragraph 1?

AKoha’s efforts have worked. BMooroa works on a cargo ship.

CMore dogs are needed on Rimatara island. DThe Rimatara lorikeet’s threats are under control.

79What was the main reason for the decline of the lorikeet’s number during the 18th century?

AInvasion of black rats. BHabitat destruction.

CFood competition. DHuman hunting.

80What does Ravatua-Smith discover?

AThe survival rate of the lorikeet’s newborns is increasing.

BThe lorikeet’s newborns are tended by other birds.

CThe lorikeets lose their habitat to other birds.

DThe lorikeets often stay in their nests.

81Which measure is adopted by Rima Ura to save the Rimatara lorikeet?

ALimiting the number of tourists on the island.

BBuilding man-made nests for the birds on the island.

CCalling on people to stop building houses on the island.

DUniting residents on the island to plant lorikeet-friendly trees.

24-25高一下·江苏连云港·期中)Sixty-year-old Chinese grandmother Su Min didn’t intend to become a hit. She was only trying to escape her husband when she hit the road in 2020 in her white car with a rooftop tent. “I felt like I could finally catch my breath,” she says, recalling the moment she drove away from her old life.

Over the next four years and 180, 000 miles, the video diaries she shared of her adventures earned her millions of supporters online. They called her the “road-tripping auntie” as she turned into a hero for women who felt trapped in their own lives. Her story is now a hit film that was released in September and she became one of the inspiring and influential women of 2024.

If she had to describe what 2024 meant to her in a single word, she says that word would be “freedom”. “As soon as I started driving, she felt freer,” as Su Min told the media over the phone from Shenyang. But it wasn’t until 2024, when she finally applied for divorce (离婚), that she experienced “another kind of freedom”

It took a while to get there: it was a complex process in China and her husband refused to divorce her until she agreed to pay him and she was still waiting for the divorce certificate to come through. She was firm that she didn’t want to look back: “I’m saying goodbye to him.” In January, 2025, she got divorced from her husband.

Although she drives alone, she never seems lonely. She chats with her followers as she films her journey, sharing what she has been cooking, how she spent the previous day and where she’s going next. 24-25高一下·江苏连云港·期中)A team of scientists from Columbia University has developed an artificial intelligence (AI) tool called the General Expression Transformer (GET). This tool can predict how genes inside cells control their behavior. The breakthrough could help researchers better understand diseases like cancer and genetic disorders. It may also lead to new treatments designed for specific cells.

The scientists trained GET using methods similar to those behind ChatGPT, the popular language AI. While ChatGPT learns grammar and language rules, GET has learned how genes work — like turning on or off like a light switch or adjusting activity levels like a volume knob (音量旋钮). This process, called gene expression, decides which proteins a cell makes and in what amounts. Proteins are vital for nearly every body function, from fighting infections to moving and thinking.

Though still new, GET could become as important as AlphaFold2, an AI system that predicts protein shapes. AlphaFold2 won the 2023 Nobel Prize in Chemistry and has been updated to AlphaFold3. Both gene regulation(studied by GET) and protein structure(studied by AlphaFold) are important to life.

“Biology is becoming a predictive science,” said Raul Rabadan, a study author and director of Columbia’s Program for Mathematical Genomics. “We’ re witnessing a revolution (变革).”

Mark Gerstein, a Yale professor not involved in the study, noted that scientists have spent 15 — 20 years collecting data to predict gene behavior. GET uses this data to analyze genes faster and more effectively. While other scientific groups have trained models using abnormal cells such as those found in different cancers, Xi Fu, a graduate student in Rabadan’s lab, decided to train GET using information from cells in normal human tissue. The training used data from more than 1. 3 million cells, covering 213 different types found in the human body.

In the future, this breakthrough could help doctors design personalized treatments by predicting how a patient’s genes might respond to therapies. While more research is needed, GET represents an exciting step toward unlocking the mysteries of life.

67How is GET different from ChatGPT?

AIt fights infections. BIt learns how genes work.

CIt won a Nobel Prize. DIt focuses on language rules.

68What made AlphaFold2 famous?

ACuring genetic disorders in patients. BAnalyzing data from 1. 3 million cells.

CDiscovering many new types of human cells. DWinning a Nobel Prize for predicting protein shapes.

69What is the author’s attitude toward the future of GET?

ASubjective. BUnclear. CPositive. DCautious.

70What can be a suitable title for the text?

AAn AI system predicts protein shapes. BAI model is trained to predict gene activity.

CScientists is comparing GET with ChatGPT. DThe AI tool helps cure abnormal human cells.

24-25高一下·江苏连云港·期中)An earthquake killed at least 95 people and left 130 injured after it struck a remote area of southern Tibet near China’s border with Nepal at dawn on Tuesday, Chinese state media reported.

Emergency responders were still assessing (评估) the damage in Dingri county from the quake, which struck at 9: 05 a. m. Beijing time, state broadcaster CCTY said. The US Geological Survey put the quake at 7.1 magnitude (震级). Earlier reports from Chinese media graded it as 6.8 magnitude.

The quake brought down more than 1,700 homes in a county that is home to60, 000 people, according to the Chinese People’s Liberation Army’s Tibet Military Command. The broader Shigatse, at the center of the quake, is the second-largest city in Tibet.

Some 1,500 firefighters were searching the collapsed (倒塌的) buildings for signs of life. Around noon, a child was rescued from a residential building, CCTV reported. Several hundred rescuers who arrived before noon began providing medical aid and relief to homeless residents. Another team, involving hundreds of rescuers and six helicopters, was expected to follow.

Sitting high on the Tibetan plateau at a height of 14,100 feet and 236 miles from the regional capital of Lhasa, Dingri is a major stop on the way to the North Base Camp, where adventurers set out climbing Mount Everest from the north face. The region can be bitterly cold in January, with temperatures often dropping as low as -15℃. Local tourism officials on Tuesday closed the North Base Camp until further notice.

A Dingri resident told local media that the shaking at first felt similar to the massive 2008 earthquake in neighboring Sichuan province that claimed 70,000 lives. Then the second floor of his house caved in and destroyed his car, said a man known only by his family name, Wang.

Past earthquakes that hit mountainous Tibetan regions of western China have drawn public concern about badly constructed homes in relatively poor and lonely villages.

63What is the function of the first paragraph?

AInforming the latest news. BShowing the right solutions.

CStarting a heated discussion. DPresenting a social problem.

64What can we learn from Paragraph 4?

AMedical aid was enough for residents. BA lot of rescue work was carried out.

CNearly half of the residents were homeless. DThe damage from the quake was figured out.

65What challenge did rescuers face besides collapsed buildings?

AExtreme cold. BLanguage problems.

CRegional tensions. DLack of medical supplies.

66How does the author report the earthquake?

ABy explaining the causes. BBy presenting a fact.

CBy making a comparison. DBy making a prediction.

2025·江苏·二模)“If your skin is getting older, you are getting older, so be careful,” says Claudia Cavadas at the University of Coimbra, Portugal. Could our fight to remove wrinkles help restore youth both inside and out?

As skin ages, more and more cells enter a lifeless state called senescence (衰老). As time marches on, the mechanisms (机制) for clearing senescent cells out start to decline and they build up in tissues. This is bad news. The build-up of these cells has been shown to be a direct cause of some of the conditions that are generally more common in older age.

To support her assumption around wrinkles driving whole-body ageing, Cavadas is planning to test experimental drugs on animal models of aged skin. “The evidence is still fragile, but, in a year, we will have experimental data” she says.

Whether resisting skin ageing resists whole-body ageing will need to be seen. But there is another good reason to slow down skin ageing at least. Aged skin is worse than young skin at pretty much everything it is supposed to do, says a plastic surgeon. Its barrier functions weaken, wounds are slower to heal (康复), sensitivity to touch declines and its ability to defend diseases is weakened.

How about anti-wrinkle creams? At present, there is limited evidence that they are genuine anti-ageing treatments. We do, however, have one method for preventing skin ageing: sunscreen, which absorbs UV rays before they do damage to the skin. It is never too soon to start. Even though the first visible signs of skin ageing usually don’t appear until our mid-20s, the potential processes are under way much earlier.

Apparently, wrinkle treatment should no longer be seen as a “skin-deep” thing, but as a vital part of staying biologically young and healthy. Everyone should pay attention to that, because we all have skin in this game.

59What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?

AThe definition of senescence. BThe causes of skin ageing.

CThe process of cell declining. DThe consequences of skin ageing.

60What does the underlined word “fragile” in paragraph 3 mean?

AArtificial. BConsiderable.

CInsubstantial. DConvincing.

61Which is a disadvantage of the aged skin?

AIt tends to be sensitive to touches. BThe cut on it recovers quickly.

CThe barrier functions work poorly. DIt stops guarding against diseases.

62What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?

AAnti-wrinkle creams are quite useful.

BWrinkle treatment is important to health.

CSunscreen may pose potential risk to the skin.

DWrinkle treatment is a practice proven skin-deep.
